Antarctic Protected Area (called Antarc tic Specially Protected Area - ASPA) - nature conservation area e stablished pursuant to Annex V to the Madrid Protocol (Protocol o n Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty done at Madrid October 4, 1991). Protection in the form of an Antarctic Specially Protected Areas established for areas of valuable environmental grounds, scientific, historic, aesthetic or primary, or to areas where it is carried out or planned scientific activities. At the time of entry into force of Annex V to the Madrid Protocol, which took place May 24, 2002, protected areas designated under the Antarctic Treaty, which is particularly Protected Areas (Specially Protected Areas - SPAs) and Sites of special scientific importance (Sites of Special Scientific Interest -- SSSI), were automatically converted into Antarctic specially protected areas.
